A quilt from the 2007 Quilt Show

8. "Dwayne and Becky's Quilt" by the Coastal Quilters

The Coastal Quilters made this medallion quilt for a wedding present for Rebekah Leakey and Dwayne Nielsen, who married in Dodge Cove in August 2003.

Karen McKinster made the centre, a Celtic True Lovers' Knot, then the quilt was passed around and each contributor added plain or pieced borders. The quilting was done in the same spontaneous, unplanned way, with each quilter choosing threads and stitches that she felt would enhance or highlight individual areas. This method of group quiltmaking was fostered on Digby Island by Kristin Miller, quiltmaker and author of The Careless Quilter - Decide As You Sew, Design As You Go Quiltmaking.

7. "Magic Tile Quilt" by Sheila Seidemann

This quilt was made by Sheila Seidemann.

Shiela: "This quilt is machine pieced and quilted. It started in a workshop at the Fabric Boutique, taught by Wendy Budde. Most of the fabrics in the quilt are Asian. Pam Holma did the machine quilting on a long-arm machine."

5. "A Walk in the Woods" by Lizette Croft

This quilt was made by LIzette Croft in Kitwanga, September 2006.

Lizette: "This quilt is machine pieced and hand quilted. All the fabrics were hand dyed. The black birds are painted on fabric using specially formulated fabric paint. Embellished with embroidery thread and beads. The quilt evolved quite a bit from the orignal concept. Originally it was going to be a tree of life with the black birds flying around it and the dragon lying at the base. I wanted to caputre a medieval mood in the quilt. As I was working on it though, the big tree of life changed to a forest. Often fabric would lead me in a certain direction, as opposed to trying to fit the fabric to a fixed design. I did not know 'til the end what it was going to look like. The figure in the woods was added towards the end and it adds to the mystical quality of the entire piece."

4. "Baby Steps — Amish 9 Patch" by Adrienne Johnston

This quilt was pieced and hand quilted by Adrienne JOhnston, a member of the LIbrary's Board of Trustees.

Adrienne: "Started in September 1994, and finally finished in April 2005. It took a long time to gather all the colours for this quilt. Many were natural dyes from Maiwa Fabrics in Vancouver, B.C. Every time I found one of the colours I had in mind I bought it and when I was clean out of patience with the collecting I pieced the 9 patch squares. I sandwiched the quilt and started quilting — Oh! Oh! Oh! The misery of discovery! I did not leave enough of the backing and it all went skee~whiff! Too much in two corners and not enough in others. It became smaller but as I always say 'no problem that can't be solved.' I have learned a lot from making this quilt. I love this quilt — the colours, pattern, crooked quilting in the borders — knots that show — hole that I repaired. It really is a metaphor for my life. With all its problems and mistakes still a thing of comfort, colour, usefulness and beauty."

3. "Autumn Leaf Maelstrom" by Sheila Seidemann

This quilt was machine pieced and hand appliqued by Sheila Seidemann.  Pam Mahoney created the design and Pam Holma did the machine quilting.

Shiela: "I began this quilt in a medallion class given by Pam Mahoney. I am always drawn to bright colours, especially greens and purples. This is my attempt at a 'brown' quilt."

2. "Purple Passion" by the Coastal Quilters

This quilt was created by the Coastal Quilters for the wedding of Lorna Nelson and Brian Osborne in July 2005. One of Lorna's favourite colours is purple, which was used as a theme colour for the wedding. The quilters took this idea one step further by incorporating the idea of "passion." Friends of Lorna's that don't quilt, but want to participate, donated many of the fabrics.  This provided a challenge and resulted in different palette than the Coastal Quilers are accustomed to.
