Quilt Show 2012

The Summer of Color!

14. “Serendipity Quilt” – by Sandra Duffus

Every other year, my friend Rita from Sechelt comes to Rupert and we have a quilt blitz. The owls had lurked on the shelf until she came and she got the brainwave to do this quilt. She promptly began cutting until I screeched, “Stop, stop it's directional!” After that false start, we again cut out the pieces for the two quilts, adding fabrics as were suitable. Both of us completed the fronts, amid laughter and groans. I finally completed mine this year and Rita is still considering how she should quilt hers. Last year in Sechelt, it was her choice as to design and my front sits there lecturing me. Maybe this October we'll complete our quilt fronts for a change. Serendipity was started with Rita in November of 2009 and finished in February 2012.

13. “Into the Wild” by Ella Gilker

This quilt was made with love for Ella's granddaughter Desiree, quilted by Betty Doering of Terrace, BC in 2011.

12. “Jeannine's Baby Quilt”, (1984) made by Sue Staehli (Sue Kopelman that was), owned by Lou Allison (Dodge Cove)

Sue made this unusual quilt as a birth present for Jeannine when our families both lived in Oona River during the 1980s. The cover is pieced and fits like an envelope over the quilted lining, which is made of flannel filled with carded sheep's wool. That way, the cover can be removed for laundering. The quilt, as you can imagine, is very warm and soft, and, as you can tell by the wear, was much used and loved.

11. “Musical Interlude” a Bargello quilt by Debra Strand

I enjoy trying new things and have yet to make 2 quilts in a similar style. When I first saw this style, I loved the movement in it. This quilt was made with commercially bought fabric as well as hand dyes in cotton and silk. The blue is all hand dyed indigo – my favorite one to do.

10. “Magic Tiles” by Wendy Bergman (Oona River)

From a pattern by Kathleen Bissett, this quilt was pieced, then hand-quilted. This is the first quilt of nine that I made of this pattern. As you can tell, I love this pattern!

8. “Busy Streets” by Jill Spyker

...and on the back side we have:

This quilt was created because I wanted to find a way to showcase a new line of organic fabrics that had come into the store. I looked online and and found a project by Elizabeth Hartman (called Birthday Cake) that I liked, so I tried to create something like it, but with something fun in it to draw the eye. I ended up creating the center applique panel with some fabulous little vehicles on a busy street. I had a lot of fun quilting this one, and drawing the air movement and exhaust around the cars.

Jill is a quilting artist, who owns Fishskin Fabrics, at the Totem Lodge in Prince Rupert.

(LibStaff: Jill's quilt is a lovely fusion of quilting meets road work. Using cheerful colours and really cute appliques, Jill's design brings out the truck lover in all of us.)

7. “Sorrento Star” by Sue Sullivan

This quilt was made on a Weekend Quilt Retreat. It was designed by Linda Meppard of Kamloops , B.C. “Sorrento Star” was quilted by Betty Doering.
