The Summer of Color!

5. “Crazy Cats” by Wendy Budde (Oona River)

Living with five cats, I am crazy about cats and love their antics. This quilt was created from a pattern by The Buggy Barn and represents a freeing way to quilt. Unlike traditional quilting, the seams don't match exactly and bits are trimmed off here and there to make it all fit. It is a lot of fun. Just like the cats.

3. “Pointless Quilt” by Dolly Harasym

In 2007 the Big Rain Quilt Guild of Prince Rupert wanted to try a round robin quilt project based on the free style creative quilts made by the Coastal Quilters. We were a group of 10 to 12 women who each made a quilt center which then was passed around to each quilter to contribute her round to the quilt top.

I call my quilt the “Pointless Quilt” because in trying to make a paper pieced star for my center I lost the points of the star. I was truly amazed at how beautiful my quilt turned out. It is also as big as the hearts of the women who contributed to it.

P.S. I had the quilt machine quilted by Betty from “The Cotton Picker Quilt Patch”. She did a wonderful job.

2. “Kristinite Challenge Quilt”, owned by Jane Wilde

This colourful quilt is the result of a quilting challenge in 2008-9 based on the style of quilting we, the loosely organized Coastal Quilters and friends, learned from Kristin Miller and her book The Careless Quilter. Some of the Coastal quilters have been quilting together since the 1970s.

The challenge for the 12 quilters who sewed on this quilt was to find the right fabrics, techniques, sewing time and creativity to add, at their turn, to the purple centre square I provided. There were no patterns, measurements or final vision in mind except my note: “I like all colours and surprising combinations”. Every two months, the growing quilt was passed to the next quilter: flying geese, seminole piecing, tilting, sunrises and special fabrics, colours and symbols of family and friendship were added.

I was thrilled and surprised to receive the blast of colour when I opened the mailed package with my finished quilt top. I machine and hand quilted it and it has been in cosy use since.

Quilters: Jane Wilde (Dodge Cove & Prince Rupert), Sheila Dobie (Grand Forks), Carol Manning (Dodge Cove & Prince Rupert), Nancy Wilde (Vernon), Jan Gardner (Vernon), Annie Ver Steeg (San Diego, California), Sheila Seidemann (Prince Rupert), Dolly Harasym (Prince Rupert), Francine Masse (Kelowna), Kristin Miller (Gabriola Island), Karen McKinster (Dodge Cove), Lou Allison (Dodge Cove).

1. “Moonlit Bouquet” by Eunice Seidemann

...and on the back side we have:

This quilt started with the lovely piece of floral print and a tiny sketch, The black fabric was used to push the colours forward. The backing is a large nine square block.

It's quilted with a free motion leaf pattern along the sashing.  (Eunice Seidemann is a quilter and fibre artist who lives and works in her studio in Hunts Inlet, on Porcher Island, BC.)
