This quilt was made by LIzette Croft in Kitwanga, September 2006.

Lizette: "This quilt is machine pieced and hand quilted. All the fabrics were hand dyed. The black birds are painted on fabric using specially formulated fabric paint. Embellished with embroidery thread and beads. The quilt evolved quite a bit from the orignal concept. Originally it was going to be a tree of life with the black birds flying around it and the dragon lying at the base. I wanted to caputre a medieval mood in the quilt. As I was working on it though, the big tree of life changed to a forest. Often fabric would lead me in a certain direction, as opposed to trying to fit the fabric to a fixed design. I did not know 'til the end what it was going to look like. The figure in the woods was added towards the end and it adds to the mystical quality of the entire piece."
