"Service Above Self"

Rotarians contribute countless volunteer hours in the community, raising funds for those in need. Organizations assisted by the Club's fundraising efforts include: the Friendship House, Scouts Canada, the Salvation Army, the Prince Rupert Society for Community Living, the Red Cross, and the Arthritis and Rheumatic Society.

The largest fundraising event is the annual Rotary Radio/TV Auction. Thanks to the generosity of local businesses and the hard work of many volunteers, this event raises the majority of Club funds, which are donated to community causes.  Other fundraisers include the annual Christmas Tree sale, which dates back to the 1950s, a food kiosk during Seafest and the Seafood Dinner.

"Service Above Self"

The Rotary Club has organized and funded many community projects. It played a key role in building the Friendship House during the 1950s and a few years ago contributed $10,000 towards replacing its roof. The Club contributed funds towards the construction of the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre in the 1970s and the addition of a 25-metre swimming pool during the 1980s.  Support for the construction of tennis courts on Second Avenue and maintenance of facilities on Lucy Island benefits outdoor enthusiasts.

In 1995, the Rotary Club donated $20,000 to the Prince Rupert Regional Hospital for an echocardiography machine. The North Pacific Cannery Museum received $14,000 towards rebuilding its 1949 mess house. The construction of the Rotary Waterfront Park in the late 1990s was a joint project of the Prince Rupert and Hecate Strait Rotary Clubs. Both Clubs contributed $50,000 towards the waterfront park. In addition to major projects, the Rotary Club donates thousands of dollars each year towards community events, sports, youth events, arts and cultural activities.
