What:
To gather information and people to make the net and to organize the artists and community groups involved.
How:
By meeting and interviewing people in the community and by approaching Elders, net menders and community groups for guidance, knowledge, and support.
When:
Where:
Prince Rupert, Port Edward and to 10 surrounding villages.
Why:
To learn how to make a stinging nettle net, to establish and build relationships in the community, and to encourage others to seek knowledge of net-making on their own. To generate interest and help to implement and regenerate the process of oral history-telling.
What's involved:
- Gifts and Honoraria:In First Nations communities it is traditional to offer gifts to someone who shares knowledge or stories. The community workers will bring gifts on their travels.
- Travel: community workers will travel to villages.
- Fibrenet website: The information we gather may be used in the multimedia display, the video, and/or the website.
- Protocol and Copyright: Strict protocol surrounds information of this type. Traditional First Nations people observe that the passing of ancient knowledge is not to be taken lightly, as First Nations people have relied solely on oral histories instead of written documentation. Preparation and research of interview release forms, copyright of the net, etc. will be required.
