What:
To revisit the art of making a salmon gill-net with stinging nettle twine.
How:
The Net Boss, Elders and youth will "hang" the net, find the best technique of working with the twine, which knots to use, etc...
When:
Where:
North Pacific Cannery Village Museum, Port Edward, B.C.
Why:
The rebirth of the nettle-fibre net will be of lasting benefit to our community. A "hands-on" revival of this dying art is the best way to ensure that it will be passed on for generations to come. Making this net will provide people a constructive environment to learn from each other and to learn about each other. The net will be a symbol of togetherness and community ties, inspiring an interest in traditional ways of life and First Nations culture.
What's involved:
- Wages, Net Boss: The Net Boss will over-see and organize the production of the net and will teach others.
- Honoraria, Elders and youth: As in the processing stage, the creation of the net will require experimentation, trial and error. Our first endeavor will be to form a solid work crew. The Net Boss and Elders will create a work plan for the volunteers, net menders, and youth. People will be transported to and from North Pacific, given work honoraria, and food will be provided.
Cost: 4 month time period.
