The Gathering Stage

What:
To gather stinging nettle plants to make the net.
How:
Volunteers, Elders and youth from Prince Rupert, Port Edward, and other interested communities will collect these plants.
When:
Fall, 1998. There is a two-week time period for gathering stinging nettles in early fall when the first snow is setting on the mountains. In preparation, we will organize the community groups and members for the gathering time.
Where:
Stinging nettles grow in the Northwest coast area and even as far South as Vancouver Island. We will 'map-out' the North coast for patches of stinging nettles with the help of volunteers (currently out looking!) These will be our harvest areas.
Why:
These plants will be processed into the twine that will make the stinging nettle net.
What's involved:
  • Honoraria, Elders and youth: We will need many stinging nettle plants. For their time and effort, we will pay the gatherers an honorarium. The number of communities that will participate will be determined by the amount of funds we are able to raise.
Cost: Two ½ month time period
