What:
The nettles will be processed and spun into twine to make the net.
How:
The Net Boss and Elders will teach volunteers and youth to make the twine.
When:
October 1998 to January 1999. In the first month, we will assess the amount of fibres we have gathered and create a strategic work plan, after which, we will work the fibres in the traditional way using traditional tools to create the stinging nettle twine.
Where:
North Pacific Cannery Village Museum.
Why:
Elders and youth will be working side by side on an art which hasn't been used in at least 60 years, an art which is almost lost due to technological advancement.
What's involved:
- Wages, Net Boss: The Net Boss will over-see and organize the production of the twine and will teach others.
- Honoraria, Elders and youth: Revisiting this art will require time for experimentation, trial and error. The amount of twine we are able to make will dictate the size of the net. This stage will require many volunteers and hours of work. Elders and youth will be given honoraria for their hard work and effort.
Cost: 4 month time period.
