We're looking for community feedback ahead of our strategic planning meetings in April. We want the Prince Rupert Library to continue to be a welcoming, useful, and meaningful place for everyone in our community.

North Pacific Cannery Fibre Arts
 

Our library is currently hosting the travelling fibre arts installation depicting North Pacific Cannery. These panels are beautiful and definitely worth visiting the library to see. 

Tempting though it is, please don't touch the work, we want to preserve their longevity.
 


Poetry Rising
 

April is national poetry month, and Claudia Stewart has put together a list of prompts to help get you started (we'll post more on our social media later in the month).

Would you like your poem included in our library display?
Bring it to the front desk or submit it to circulation@princerupertlibrary.ca

Here's the first set of prompts:
-That one evening...
-A vivid dream...
-Describe a specific colour to someone who has never seen any colour before.
-Using a random word generator, or another random means, choose five to use in a poem.
-Ode to a kitchen utensil...
-My favourite toy...
-I felt two things at once...
-My first plane ride...
-What's difficult now...
-Write a poem using either the word "route" or "root" or both.
-An open door...
-What we've built...
-When I dance...
-Hope...



Games Night at the Library


Join us for a fun evening of board games! Mike Gruber will be hosting two Games Nights events this month. Bring your friends, family, or come on your own to join in on a casual game.

Beginners are welcome, Mike can help you learn the rules of a new game.
 

Wednesday, April 1st & Wednesday, April 29th 5:30-8:30 pm.
Open to adults, teens, and children with a caregiver.
 



Social Cafe
 
A social event for people who don't like social things.

Social Cafe is a safe space for quirky and artistic young adults who don't enjoy the typical social outing. Come and be yourself, no pressure, and no expectations.

Fridays 1:30-3:30 pm in the Library's multipurpose room.


 



Canada Reads Watch Party

Lou will be hosting our 5th annual Canada Reads watch party. You're welcome to come join us to watch the debates live with enthusiastic company.

Monday, April 13th- Thursday, April 16th starting 9am in the multipurpose room.

Seed Exchange
 
Come share your knowledge, swap some seeds, learn new tricks, socialize with fellow gardeners, and enter to win a prize at our 4th annual Seed Exchange.

Let's Talk Literacy
 
Curious about how children learn to read and write? Hosted by Dr. Una Malcolm, this family workshop will explore how literacy develops, share simple ways to support learning at home, and discuss what caregivers can do when reading or writing is challenging.

Thursday, April 23rd at 7 pm in the multipurpose room.

Earth Day
 
We'll be at the Salt Marsh  to celebrate Earth Day, fingers crossed for another sunny day this year.

Writer's Social

Join our casual drop-in writer's group at the library! Open to anyone interested in pursuing creativity through writing. 

There will be the option of warm-up prompts, short exercises, or working on existing projects. Sharing your work will always be encouraged, but is never mandatory.

Saturday, April 25th from 2-4 pm in the Library's Multipurpose Room.


Tenant Rights and Income Security with Paul Lagace
 

We all know housing is a challenge, but did you know that a local Poverty Law Advocate/Coordinator comes to the Library once a month to answer any questions you have?

Paul Lagace of The Prince Rupert Unemployed Action Centre will be available to talk about Tenant Rights and Income Security as well as being able to answer questions regarding:
  • Landlord tenant Laws
  • Employment Insurance
  • Income Assistance
  • Human Rights
  • Disability Assistance
  • Employment Standards 
  • CPP
No appointment required! Come and talk to Paul,

Preschool Programs
 
We have launched the next round of our preschool programs at the Prince Rupert Library. They will wrap up at the end of the month.

Babytime Rhymes is full, but we are taking names for waitlists. We still have space in Tales for Twos and lots of room in both Story Hour options.

Wednesdays 10:15-10:45 April 1st - April 29th

Story Hour
Wednesdays 1:30-2:30 April 1st - April 29th, or
Thursdays 10:30-11:30 April 2nd - April 30th

Youth Book Club

For April, youth were asked to choose a book for themselves, and to come prepared to discuss why they had chosen the title, whether or not they enjoyed it, and if they would recommend it to others. This would be an excellent time for any interested youth to join in.

We'll also be discussing The Barren Grounds by David A. Robertson, as our March session was unfortunately cancelled.

Artist Meet-Up
 
Free drop-in art sessions are for anyone interested in creating art. All skill levels and mediums are welcome. 
Bring your project, inspiration, supplies, and some recent works to share!

2nd and 4th Wednesday of every month.

Create & Make

Our free drop-in afterschool program is up and running again! We've got LEGOS, games, and arts and crafts to keep kids entertained. This program is for children grade one and up.

Kindergarteners are welcome with an adult caregiver. 

Thursdays 3:15 - 4:30 pm in the multipurpose room.

 




Tech Time with Tye

Drop in times:
Tuesdays 6 - 7 pm
Wednesdays 10 - 11 am
Thursdays 2 -3 pm


You can still book a one-on-one appointment with Tye. Whether you're finding technology overwhelming, or just want to brush up on your tech skills, Tye can help.

Knit & Crochet Social

Every Thursday afternoon the Library hosts a cozy group of crafters. If you knit, crochet, or have a similarly portable textile based hobby, you should come and try it out. 

This is a social event for self-directed individuals to bring their personal projects.

Thursdays starting at 1 pm in the multipurpose room.

March Catch-up

Our fish are swimmers! Once they got moving, it was clear they were packed in a little too tight, so some got an early release, but now we have space to watch the others grow.

The mural in our new (currently under construction) Teen Zone is well underway. Local artist Nick John has been working on the painting daily with some early assistance from some of the youth who attended the mural planning session.

Our pods also arrived. We have two different models, "The Quad" is on the main floor and seats four, while "Tuesday" is upstairs and suitable for a single individual. They're excellent for having private conversations, dulling distractions, or taking a moment to yourself if you're feeling overstimulated. Pods can be reserved in advance, or used drop-in if available. Please sign in with the circulation staff to use a pod
