Card Game Designing Workshop
with Luke Parnell - Indigenous Storyteller in Residence
Have you ever wanted to try your hand at designing a game of your own?
Join Luke on Thursday, November 19th for a card game designing workshop!
Luke Parnell is our Indigenous Storyteller in Resience at the Prince Rupert Library| Wap Liitsx.
"My Nisga'a name is Guxw Gahlgan (always carving) and I’m Laxgiik (eagle) from Wilps Kwa'kaans. My mother is Nisga'a from Gingolx and my father was Haida from Masset. I have been a carver for over 20 years and though my primary medium is wood, my materiality is determined on a project by project basis.
My practice explores the relationship between Northwest Coast Indigenous oral histories and Northwest Coast Indigenous art, centring on narrative. I create these artworks in order to understand these histories and concepts and their relationship to contemporary events."
Upcoming Events:
Discussion: Creating Art using Indigenous Ways of Creating without Appropriating Culture - Wednesday, December 9th
In January Luke will also oversee a community art piece which seeks to answer the question, "What does the Library mean to you?"
Stay tuned for more dates and details!

As we missed the October newsletter window, we've got a bit of a September wrap-up as well!
September outreach started off with Community Registration Day, then moved onto the Food Symposi-yum. Did you know there were rabbits at the Food Symposi-yum this year? We also attended the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation event at the curling rink where we were moved by the dancers, and the words of wisdom and resilience that were shared. It was an amazing turnout.
|
|
September also saw some Prince Rupert Library | Wap Liitsx staff attend our North Coast Library Federation Conference in Terrace. We had a great time and left full of new ideas.
October kept us busy, with Joline Martin's author reading on day one! We also co-hosted a Coastal Conversation with Dr. Spencer Greening and a Dyslexia Awareness Night with a screening of "Mical" a short film.
Luke Parnell hosted his first event as our Indigenous Storyteller in Residence, screening his short film "Remediation" and discussing his artwork, his philosophy, and his upcoming projects.
There is some subtle roadwork going on outside the library these days, and we don't know for sure how long it will last. The library will remain open, delivery services are available.
We hosted our second annual Blood on the Clocktower games night- and this year it was the side of good that prevailed! The same night we had our first ever (maybe) open house, where library management, the library board, and our volunteer group Friends of the Prince Rupert Library each had a table and were available to talk to members of the public.
Donations have started coming in for our annual Novel Idea Auction and we're getting very excited, and the furniture has finally arrived for our Teen Zone!

Your Prince Rupert Library card also provides access to CELA and Libby. If you have any questions about these available services, please ask at the circulation desk.
