National Indigenous History Month

A shelf display of books by Indigenous authors, labeled "New Indigenous Reads," at the Prince Rupert Public Library.

June is National Indigenous History Month, and it is National Indigenous People’s Day this Sunday!

The Library will be closed, but here are a few of the ways we try to serve and highlight local Indigenous cultures every day:

New Indigenous Reads - we have an growing collection of books by indigenous authors. Recent acquisitions like “The Lost Haida Manga” by Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas are highlighted in this section.

Northwest History Collection - this collection of non-circulating books focuses on the history of the Pacific North Coast. To visit this collection, ask Library staff to be signed in.

Lisa Doolan Latimer Collection - this collection is named for a beloved former staff member. Lisa was a member of the Nisga’a Nation and deeply involved in her culture and community. She advocated tirelessly for increased Indigenous representation in the library, for the principles of Truth and Reconciliation, and for Every Child Matters. We pledge to continue her work. Items in this collection are marked with a blue star on the spine.

Legal Grants - the Prince Rupert Library received a small grant to help alleviate the cost of printing legal papers. We have printed copies of some of the ongoing class action applications regarding boarding homes and hospitals.
